New Delhi: In this fast-paced lifestyle, when women be it at home or work completely intrude with stress. Well, stress and depression are the leading cause of chronic health conditions. One of them is the rising incidence of Chronic fatigue syndrome, which is fairly common among women in India. According to a survey, one in eight women in the country reported Chronic fatigue. But what is this syndrome?

In conversation with News9, Dr Anil Ramakrishna, Senior Consultant – Neurology, SPARSH Hospital, Yelahanka, Bangalore said, “Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) affects approximately 10-15 per cent of middle-aged women. Stress and depression being the common triggers in most cases and also the recent viral infections like post-COVID recovery. Patients frequently describe experiencing widespread body pain, cognitive difficulties, and disruptions in sleep patterns, often accompanied by mild anxiety or depression.”

“While CFS can occur at any age, it is more commonly observed in teenagers and middle-aged individuals, with a slightly higher prevalence in women, possibly due to hormonal variations. Despite its prevalence, the exact cause of CFS remains unknown, although genetic factors may play a role. Diagnosing CFS relies on recognising its hallmark symptoms, which persist for at least six months. Individuals with CFS find that even simple tasks such as walking short distances or engaging in light physical activities can quickly lead to overwhelming tiredness, with rest providing little relief.”

Risk factors

A thorough evaluation should be done to identify potential risk factors and underlying causes of CFS. This condition is characterised by extreme fatigue and tiredness, often accompanied by sleep disturbances and generalised body aches. Unlike typical fatigue, activities worsen symptoms, leaving individuals feeling increasingly fatigued, even after adequate rest.

Treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Treatment strategies for CFS largely depend on self-care. As per Dr Ramakrishna, “Patients should be encouraged to learn relaxation techniques, such as yoga or breathing exercises, to reduce the symptoms and manage anxiety. Additionally, maintaining a balanced nutrition diet and incorporating gentle exercise routines, like short outdoor jogs, can help in improving overall well-being.” Also, the support of the family plays a huge role if such a situation occurs. In some cases, healthcare providers may prescribe anti-anxiety or anti-depression medication to address accompanying symptoms.

By raising awareness and understanding of chronic fatigue syndrome, individuals can recognise the signs and symptoms early, facilitating timely diagnosis and effective management. Through collaborative efforts between patients and healthcare providers, we can strive towards improved quality of life for those affected by this challenging condition says Dr. Anil.
